A spot where ideas and actions for saving our planet can be tossed about, debated, agreed, and maybe even some action plans developed and decided upon.....
As a start, why do we continue to perpetuate this myth that we must retire at certain ages. As if we have "had it" by a certain age - what bullshit...... Let's stop saying that our childrn and theirs are going to have to "pay higher taxes to keep the aging population in a lifestyle slightly better than abject poverty". It is simply not true - modern medicine has given us longer lives, but business says they are useless lives after age 60-65 (and often much younger). Our brains do not shut down at 65! But, they will if we stop using them (I recall an old study which found that "retired" air force officers only lived an average of SIX years after leaving the air force at age 55. They had been so active and programmed for a certain workstyle all their lives that they simply didn't know how to cope with retirement). What we need to do is design new workstyles and meangingful jobs for an aging workforce. To assist in accepting this new paradigm we may have to dispense with the notions of speed, power, and economic growth as the only indicators of success, and think to differently. New values are needed.
Isn't it interesting that the physical world is now changing rapidly for the worse - the environment is degrading fast, life supporting ecosystems are collapsing, society is losing cohesiveness and meaning, but governments and big business stick to the one and only mantra - economic growth at all costs...... The planet simply can't support that paradigm.
It's time for a change.........
